More Quilting of the Golden Gate

Just a few more special pictures from the Golden Gate Bridge 75th birthday celebration, then I can move on to other summer events!

The fireworks over the bridge were so spectacular, and looking at them again, I am once again so glad we made the effort to attend this event.

I combined a sketch technique of the bridge with the fireworks, masked into one of Jen Maddocks Quilt Templates.  The elements are from Jen maddocks Patriotic Fun, with Film Strip 2 on the sides, and the glitter style from Jen's Apple Blossom.

Sneak Peak at Jo-Scraps

I have been working on a little project at Oscraps that is so FUN!  Here is a sneak peak of more to come.  This was taken on the 9th hole, I do love the view on this hole, but too bad we were waiting with enough time to take a picture...come on people, play ready golf!
I of course am super ready with my new Athleta golf skirt that Jo helped me buy this weekend.

The Golden Gate Boat Parade

One of the events we really wanted to see at the Golden Gate Bridge 75th Birthday Celebration was the boat parade in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.  We were a little late since I had to stop in the Ferry Building for a cup of Blue Bottle coffee.

By the time we got down past Fort Mason the boat parade had already started, and Mr. AC had to race to catch a shot of the fire boat.  But he got it!  as well as some other great photos from tugs to sailboats to the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), the supercarrier and one of the largest warships in the world.  Those tiny white things lined up along the deck are sailors!

I discovered these Anna Aspnes Fotoblendz Album templates which make short work of finishing up a collection of photos.

The great alpha (stick a map image on anything and I love it!) is Traveler's Treasure Box Alpha 1 from Maya de Groot Designs.

Revisiting London - Cheerio!

The story in a nutshell - Cheery-O Ona from down under visits London, meets up with two Cheery-O Brits Audrey and Selena, plus two more from the Netherlands, Maya and mom Diane.  Cheery-O designer Maya designs a Cheerio kit in celebration of the event, and I dig up pictures from our London trip in 2006 to scrap with the kit.

Quilting the Golden Gate

Using Quilt Templates 5 from Jen Maddocks.

I have so many more pictures I still want to scrap from the Golden Gate Bridge 75th birthday celebration, including this precious one of a rowboat on the beach along Crissy Field with the bridge in the background.  A man was lying on the beach near his boat, and a few questions determined he had rowed over from Sausalito, which while not far, was impressive to me.  It looks far, and the water is no bathtub, the winds to be reckoned with.  He deserved his Foster, and I do hope he made it home safely.  Meanwhile, his boat made for a great picture.

I combined the quilt template effect with a watercolor sketch effect for a very dreamy-scape.  The background is Jen Maddocks Folded Craft paper, the elements from Jen Maddocks Tell Your Story, with the border from Anna Aspnes Find My Way Overlays No 3.

Scrapping Letters with Simply Kelly

You know those post cards where images of the subject are inside the letters?
Like this...
San Diego Postcard

Well these next pages are a little different, but still play on the idea of clipping pictures to letters, something I find inexplicably appealing.

The templates for the letters are from Simply Kelly, and despite how I show them in the next two pages, each of the blocks is a separate clipping mask, so versatile!

The first one I did uses pictures Mr AC took on their trip to Monterey last Friday. Wish I could have gone instead of staying home and working on Jewelry & Watches, but at least I got the pictures with which to scrap.

Not content to stop at one, another page focuses on that icon of the Monterey Peninsula, the Lone Cypress.

I look forward to scrapping more letters with this kit.

One Kit Five Ways - Ghiradelli Square

For a fun little exercise among the Oscraps blog team, we chose one kit and each scrapped with it, as a challenge, to show our styles, to show the versatility of kits, to have fun with memories!

The kit chosen is Still Life by One Little Bird. hat struck me about the kit were the neutral colors and the architectural looking patterns, so I chose to do something with building photos.

I like to work in series, especially if I am working on a set of photos from a trip or event. Right now, I am working on the photos from the 75th birthday celebration of the Golden Gate Bridge. Even though the photos are from the same event, I like to mix it up in terms of kits, so I will often work through challenges and CT assignments, using different kits, but progressing through the photos.

Ghiradelli Square is a preserved historical building in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. It is a beautiful building, beautifully preserved and restored, serving as a venue for shops and a fancy hotel, as well as home to a very-popular Ghiradelli chocolate shop.

I started by blending 4 papers from the kit to get an architectural look I liked, then worked with the largest photo, working through a series of blendings, incorporating additional journaling tags into the blendings for what looks somewhat like a painterly effect.

The large title is an extraction of another picture showing the lighted sign over the entrance to the courtyard of the building. The third picture, colorized, shows the entrance to the shop, and the dates, 1852-1916. I used some additional circular elements to contrast with the austere lines of the building, some paint splotches for grunge, and a bit of journaling and embellishment to tell the story.

It's a pretty good representation of my preferred style of filling up every inch of a page, no white-space allowed, lots of blending, large pictures, and most importantly, a captured memory.

A Challenge, A Story, A Freebie

Written for the Oscraps blog:

Today I started out to remind you of all our monthly challenges, but two things happened:
  1. I thought we might have already written a post summarizing the June challenges...we didn't, so we owe you, or go here.
  2. I started looking at the challenges in order, starting with the Web Inspiration challenge, and was stopped in my tracks
Last month I wrote a post about Pages that Tug at the Heart. Well, hold on to your heartstrings as you take a look at what Oscraps members have been doing with this challenge. First off, here is the challenge photo, an ad from Athleta, whose company slogan is "Power to the She". Now, this image and ad has particular meaning to me, but I will save that for later.
This theme and challenge has resonated so strongly with so many of our members. Here are a couple of Cheery-O pages, first one from Trudy, who writes to her strong and powerful daughter. I've read this several times and still tear up every time I do.

From Laurie, who journals about the power of positive and negative thinking, and by looking carefully at the pictures, we see that this journaling is very personal.
And from Chris, who in a little role reversal expresses not only love for her beautiful daughter, but also calls her 'her inspiration'. Yes, we can identify with this, a powerful "she' feeling!
As I was planning my approach to this challenge, I came across this image, several teenage girls, addressing the issues of body and bullying. I was so touched and moved by this image and the efforts of these girls to overcome stereotyping and bullying, that I incorporated it into a simple page to reinforce the message:

And on to our member pages. Scrap-genie reminds us that strength is not just physical, in this loving tribute to her sister:

Our hearts go out to alegna as we read this stream-of -consciousness story of her baby's survival, a tribute to power.

I can hardly express the awe at the power of this woman, paid tribute to by kentrabay in this page about her aunt.

And for one of the most moving stories I have read, I invite you to read the journaling in this page by shinta, who has shared an incredible story of power and grace.
Even though we cannot read the story, we can identify with the heartbreak but strength expressed in SharLamb's page:

OK, tissues away, we are done with the heart-string tugging! But not with the stories! How is this for a coincidence...my daughter is an assistant designer for Athleta. This is purely coincidence. Chris had no idea when she chose the inspiration. I knew this ad well, because it is on the front of the catalog that is sitting on my desk right now. So for some fun connection, I asked DD to take some pictures of her office, which is in Petaluma California, just a bit north of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. I wanted her in all of them, but I only got one with her in it. No matter, that works. I put together this collage of my powerful young lady, of whom I am very proud.

Now for those of you who have stuck with me, a little something for you. I put together a FREEBIE of Power to the She word art that you can download. Just click the preview to go to the download. Would love to see this in your layouts!

Golden Gate Bridge - The Fireworks

I went from yesterday's  'I finally got started' to shots of the fireworks in pretty short order.  What can I say?  Fireworks are awesome.  The best effects were the cascades of sparklers off the deck of the Golden Gate bridge, and the double-tower simultaneous explosions.
You can just see the south tower and span of 'international orange' in the bottom photo.

I decided to start with a simple collage of a few of the shots taken by Mr AC.  The cool daisy-like shapes are done with the CS5 dynamic azalea brush.

Golden Gate Bridge 75th - View from Crissy Field

I finally started scrapping the pictures from last weekend's Golden Gate Bridge 75th birthday celebration.  Sometimes it's hard to start scrapping when there are a lot of pictures.

But I decided to start with my favorites, the shots from the beach at Crissy Field.

At the same time, I used them for the June Color challenge at Oscraps.  This month's challenge was a little different, we were to use a template from one designer and kits from two other designers.  This is Anna Aspnes FotoBlendz Layered Template No 11, with Maya de Groot's Travelers Treasure Box and Joanne Brisebois' Ala Plage.

Green Day in San Francisco, Part 2

There are also some great peachy red colors in the new Green Day kit from Jen Maddocks, very much like pizza colors!

The pizza at Za on Russian Hill was amazing.  First of all, it is likely the largest pizza I have even seen.  But with pretty thin crust, it was not overwhelming.  All the ingredients were super fresh, and it was beautifully done.  Quite a treat!

In this page I also used the journaling/note cards in the Green Day kit.
