The Birthday Baloon

I've never been a fan of balloons...they're just too much trouble...hard to blow up, frightening when they blow up in your face, dangerous when they toss around in your car and block your vision...
But when the occasion is very special, it calls for a balloon!

Cloudy Today, Chance of Beauty

Yesterday's stormy weather has cleared, leaving beautiful clouds in its wake, amongst the blue sky, here reflected and fractured in the glass panes of a building in San Jose.

Always remember to stop and observe, and don't forget to be a tourist in your own neighborhood.

Chasing Rainbows

When I see a ray of sunshine amongst the darkness of a rainy sky, I grab and camera and head for the windows, for I am a rainbow chaser.

I was not disappointed today, and the rainbows are so spectacular from our perch atop the hill.

Local Color

How lucky I am, to be able to walk in my neighborhood and find such beautiful color.

Casualties

Considering that we had an estimated 18,000 lbs of stuff moved, and that does not include our cars, I guess I should be glad at the small number of casualties.

1. Minnie Mouse's nose from the cute picture frame that Mom found for me at a flea market (nothing that a little gorilla glue can't cure)

2. the 3rd of 4 champagne glasses...we have one of these left (lost cause...in the trash)

3. this technically doesn't count as being a casualty of the move, but if we hadn't placed things temporarily where they were in the yard, the burst of wind might not have thrown the wooden painting forward...

smashing the mirror ball to the ground.

Adieu, dear mirror ball, I loved you quite a lot, and was going to cover you with mosaics to hide your pitted state. You will be missed!

Welcome Back to Work

Although I was only gone from Friday to Sunday, it seemed like a LONG time since so much had happened!

We are in the new house, and have been unpacking from pre-down to after midnight.

It was nice to get back to work and find my African Violets had marked the time by putting on a new show of blooms.

Signs of Spring

There has been a warming trend all week, creeping up on us, and today it hit full force with a powerful day in the 60s. A true sign of the trend...fruit trees are bursting into bloom!

This one is right outside the house on the way to the pool side of the back yard.

As I walked under it, I noticed it was buzzing with bees, and a few delicate white petals showered down on me :-)

What a Difference!

What a difference a week, and a good painter, and an electrician, can make!

74 Seattle Red + KM3542-2 West Warwick = AWESOME kitchen and family room!

Solution to no ceiling lights! Notice how my awesome painter Jim painted the wire mold to match the wall and ceiling.

More Fabric Finds

At the very back corner of Calico Corners, in the clearance section, was a perfect Provencal print called, most appropriately, Provence :-)

The colors are a little redder than the scan shows, but not quite as red as the walls, so the prospective balloon shades should brighten up the window walls quite a bit.

The very helpful Beena suggested I trim them with a diagonal plaid ruffle...yum!

Fabric Finds

Oh what fun it is to shop for fabric!

My two exciting finds...a blue on yellow toile that looks divine in the bedroom...

and a colorful rooster print for my red and gold family room, called, how appropriately, Saison de Primtemps...

The talented and wonderful young lady (oh I would like her job!) from Calico Corners stole my heart when she said..."what I love about Country French is that it should look like you've pulled together a collection of things you love, so the colors and fabrics don't need to match perfectly, you just need to love them!"

Announcing the Move

I know, probably no one sends out moving announcements anymore, but, I have a $75 credit from Shutterfly for doing a usability study, and there are still some people out there, believe it or not, who do not use the internet.

And so I grabbed the listing photo of our new house (too bad it was taken on such a gray day) and photoshopped in a picture from Christmas (yes, we were in our bathrobes, but we had good happy smiles on!).

Progress??

The plumber has disappeared under the house...

all the rooms are lined with green rubbery stuff...

my new hardwood family room is covered with paper...

and the kitchen is under wraps...

Now that's what I call progress!

Step 4 - Plumbing

Never have I encountered so many leaky faucets and stuck plumbing parts. Of course, I don't give plumbing a whole lot of thought on any given day, despite the constant use...if something is leaking, you call the plumber, you write the check.

It's funny how the common denominator among so many of the contractors and workers is the 'shaking head', as in "I can't believe how neglected/dirty/stained/rotten/did I mention dirty this house is".

But, as the contractor says in The Money Pit..."if the foundation is good..."

And so we continue, replacing most of the plumbing in the master bath. I love these old fashioned, curvy, heavy brass teapot fixtures. They remind me of Aladdin's lamp. But alas, they are history :-(

Step 3 - Paint Another Room

On the first floor, off a hallway which turns to the left for the master bedroom, to the right is another little bedroom, destined to become mon atelier.

Complete with dirty walls, an ugly mirror, and funky curtains with soffets (additional soffets and a matching mirror surround were found in the garage, oh and a water stained ceiling and wall.

So, let's keep going with Provence Cream. Depending upon the light, it can look quite yellow...in fact a little more yellow than I was imagining, but, nothing wrong with the color of sunshine.

Step 2 - New Floors

I've always wanted hardwood floors. My Mom's house has beautiful hardwood parquet floors...which got covered up with rust shag carpeting in the 70's, and is still covered, but I remember how beautiful it was. Unfortunately, I also remember more than one of us slipping and falling on the hardwood floor, but I don't run around the house as much as I used to.

Finally, I am getting my own hardwood floors.

Before...yucky dirty stained ugly carpeting (can you tell I did not like the carpeting??).

After...beautiful Tiete chestnut, laid on the diagonal to match the lines of the doorway, wrapped around the bar, where the golden bar lights make it glow!

Makes me want to dance :-)

Step 1 - Paint the Bedroom

It was hard to see past the color on the walls of the master bedroom. It was interesting, and I guess well-done, but I've never been a purple girl. In fact, I have not had a painted bedroom since I was in college, preferring for simplicity to stick with builder's white.

Before...dark gray-lavender with streaks of gold lightning:

After...Provence Cream!

Changing Directions

I miss my artwork...I miss my tools...my scissors, glue, paper supply, fabric, rotary cutter.
Since when do my sewing machines have their covers on them??
Well, since I got it in my head that we would move, and now we're entering the home stretch.
My creative energies have turned to the decor of this, my giant new project :-)
